Guarding the Heart

Top Security Issues

Prov 4:23

Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. NIV

Keep and guard your heart with all vigilance and above all that you guard, for out of it flow the springs of life. AMP

The top vaults in the world, which are said to be impenetrable, are this way for a reason. The reason of course is what they are guarding. I know  movies will show these vaults with the right planning can be broken into and cleaned out of all their valuables. But in reality this just is not true. For example, Fort Knox ranks #1 in having the highest level for security. In fact no one to this day has ever attempted to break into its vault. This vault is surrounded by four fences, two which are electric. Then there is the armed and highly trained guards, and all the monitored video cameras. There are also a maze of security doors and guards before you get to a 22 ton door.  The walls of the vault are made of 4 foot thick granite with 750 tons of reinforced steel. The lock on this door is so sophiscated it requires ten people to open it. Oh and you will need all of them together for each person only knows their part of the lock system. Once you get inside the vault, you’ll have to break into the smaller vaults tucked inside, where you will find 5000 tons of gold. Of course hauling all that gold is another logistical problem all its own. Surrounding all of this is a small military base containing 30,000 soldiers you would have to get past.

The top 5 vaults in the world were built to withstand everything and anything from nuclear bomb, to any number of natural disasters and of course robbery. They were built this way because of what they are guarding. The vault’s contents have been valued at such that it requires this kind of protection.

God tells us to guard our hearts because of the valuable contents they hold.  In fact He tells us to guard our heart with a vigilance. Why, because from our hearts (or using the term from chapter two “our storage”) flow all the issues of life. All of life is going to be coming from our heart or storage vault. Scriptures tell us to guard it and protect it. It contains the very essence of our whole life. Yet many do not see the treasure which our hearts contain. They do not see the importance of protecting what it holds.

Jesus stated, “Blessed are the pure of heart they will see God”, “Where your treasure is there will be your heart”, “Out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks”, and in the parable of the sower and the seed He taught it was the condition of the heart which enabled the seed to grow properly.  Do we see how valuable it truly is to protect and guard our hearts? Our hearts contain His life, and all aspects of His life, if we don’t guard the heart the enemy begins to use it against us. He breaks into our storage vault, the heart, and steals the words of God and puts something else in its place, which has no value at all.

True men and women of faith know they are responsible to not only guard their own heart but are responsible to speak faith to any heart which requires building up. From those things which are stored in our heart we live out our entire existence here on this earth. Our heart guards the environment we live in.

(Environment: the surroundings or conditions in which a person, lives or operates.)

Just about every time you find an environment of discouragement, doubt, lack of God’s joy, or a negative atmosphere you will find no guards being put on the heart. In reality the vault has been robbed.

One of the most dangerous areas which can affect us is what others say and believe around us which does not line up with God’s words. The best way to prevent this is by creating the atmosphere yourself. If you are guarding your own heart first, then you will automatically guard what’s not of God being projected around you. You attack the lack of faith by projecting the right thoughts and words. Unless you have a guard in place, these people and what they are projecting will effect your own heart and environment. So be the first to project faith into the environment surrounding you.

Train yourself to be the best guard you can be when it comes to your heart. Learn to watch from all directions. It is not going to be “if” the enemy attacks, because he will. But whether he succeeds or not depends on the guard you put into place. You should think of your heart like one of these top impenetrable vaults guarding the most valuable of all things you could possibly own, LIFE !!! Your life depends on how you guard your heart.

Luke 6:43-45

"No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. 44 Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. 45 The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. NIV

Notice how this scripture states the good or evil stored up is what comes forth. So this begs the question, what have you stored up in your heart? If it’s good you eat the fruit of it, and if it's bad you will eat this fruit as well. Fruit here meaning what you are bringing forth as life. We know according to scripture Jesus gave us abundant life (Jn 10:10) He has also blessed us with every spiritual blessing (Eph 1:3). So what are we bringing forth as life? This is not a hard concept to grasp. Are you guarding your heart as holding one of the most valuable of all treasures God ever allowed you to possess? You have inside of your heart the life of God Almighty. If you are going to grow a strong faith, then you are going to have to guard your heart as to what goes in and what comes out.

Find everything good about God the Father in scriptures and store these up.This allows God to bring them out for you to live the way He intended you to live. Remember, when entering an unfamiliar environment put your guards in the right place. Be ready to change those things that may not be right by guarding the life of God you possess in your heart.  Be ready to speak that which is good out of what you have stored up in heart. Not only will you protect yourself but you could possibly change the environment. This will help all those around you with their hearts and what's coming out of them.

One of the best ways to guard your own heart is by helping others unobtrusively guard theirs. Don't come across self righteous, but come across as one with words of hope and faith because it’s stored in an abundance in your own heart.  We are to share our hearts with those around us. What better way to do so than speaking words of encouragement into their situation. When we share our hearts this way, from the good of our vaults, we are really sharing the life of Jesus Christ.
